Making a Yeast Starter

In this video, Joe Polvino shows us how to make a quick and easy yeast starter. For those that don’t know yeast starters are a method for raising your yeast cell count before you pitch the yeast into your wort. Yeast starters also help to reduce the lag time by making sure your [...]

From the Brewery

  • 7/14/2008 - The Blueberry Breeze has carbonated for about a week.  I tried one of the beers and the blueberry taste is no where to be found.  Then again, I did only use about 1 pound of canned blueberries for a five gallon batch of 40 IBU Pale Ale - what the heck was I thinking?
  • 6/27/2008 - Well the Blueberry Breeze is starting on week two in the secondary fermenter.  On July 4 I will be bottling the brew and then begin the tasting sessions on July 11.  I'm guessing the beer will taste ok on July 11, so-so on July 18, and then on July 25 be really, really good beer.
  • 6/20/2008 - Last Friday I brewed the Blueberry Breeze and pitched it using Wyeast American Ale.  Tonight I will be racking it to the secondary and harvesting the yeast to use in my next brew ("Northwoods Pale Ale").  I am employing a 1-2-3 sequence in this beer, one week in the primary, two weeks in the secondary and three weeks in the bottles.

This means I need to build or buy some equipment - most notably the mash and lauter tun. I've just posted an article on these and can't wait to see how my project turns out.
  • 06/06/2008 - Trying to decide if I should do my Blueberry Breeze as an extract or as an all grain brew.  If extract I can order and do the brew right away, if all grain I have to wait to acquire the equipment - decisions, decisions
